Pies among Thanksgiving favorites for BSU students

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away, and that means many college students will be heading home for turkey, dressing and other goodies.

While some Ball State University students are looking forward to having a traditional dinner, others favor unique side dishes.

“My mom makes this sweet potato thing with marshmallows on top,” Kaitlyn Kaminskas said. “It is so good.”

Marshmallows on top of any dish can bring holiday desserts to mind. Max Burns has a few favorites.

“Pecan pies for sure," Burns said. “It’s just dank.” His grandma also makes a special candy treat. “My grandma makes this thing with crushed up Snickers bar, apples and a [bunch] of cool whip.” It’s not a dip, Burns said “[he] goes at it with a fork.”

Some students like to get in the kitchen to help with the dinner. Cheyanne Cox makes her special hash brown casserole every year.

“It is my own creation,” Cox said. “I started making it when I was 13 and we’ve had it at our dinners ever since.”

While many students are able to travel home for Thanksgiving, some cannot.

“I had to work on Thanksgiving last year. My dinner was at Be Here Now because they were the only place serving food,” Aaron Radwick said. “I had a chicken salad sandwich and it kind of tasted like home.”

Ty Kulan didn’t get to have a holiday meal at all last year because his jaw was wired shut, so actually having a meal this year will be better.

“You could say I’m looking forward to it,” Kulan said.

And of course, Thanksgiving is more than just the plethora of delicious foods. While Cassie Sloma said, “I’m looking forward to turkey and mashed potatoes,” the food isn’t the only thing on her mind. “I’m really looking forward to the dog show that comes on after the parade.”

We asked other Ball State University students for their Thanksgiving favorites and combined them into this listicle.
