Ambitious students create Dynamo Art Exhibitions

Two Ball State University art students are the creators of a group called Dynamo Art Exhibitions.

Katie Norman and Sarah LaBarge came up with the idea after talking to each other in class about specific training they wished they had.

“There really isn’t a professional practice class available and it’s important to know how to display your work and get your name out there,” Norman said.

Norman and LaBarge hoped that by doing their own art shows they can teach themselves how to be better professionals and help teach others as well. The goal of Dynamo Art Exhibitions is to get a group of dedicated artists together to make art shows happen in Downtown Muncie and the surrounding Indianapolis areas.

Dynamo puts on their own shows in order to be self-reliant artists and not rely on other art galleries to display their work. The group started in January 2015 when they put together their first show in Downtown Muncie.

This week the group will be putting on their fourth show at the Muncie ArtsWalk. Dynamo hopes to do two or three more art shows before the end of the fall semester. More than 20 artists contribute to Dynamo. All types of artists are welcome to contribute their art to one of Dynamo’s shows.

The majority of art that has been contributed has come in the form of drawing. However, glassmaking, photography, and other art styles have been displayed. When attending a Dynamo show guests can expect food, beverages, and music by either a DJ or live band. Dynamo is currently made up of Ball State students and alumni but the group is looking to make more local connections and attract artists who do not attend Ball State.

“Our group is really great and we are looking to expand,” said Norman.

For more information about attending a Dynamo show or submitting art to be displayed, you can visit and like their Facebook page, Dynamo Arts Exhibition.

The group has two meetings a month for anybody interested in joining Dynamo. Dates, times, and locations of these meetings can be found on their Facebook page.
